How to have markers in a cluster of cards instead of a stack

my team is trying to solve the problem with limited time. We have developed a rather complex map interface on our site for displaying content (travel, social content, etc.). for example, when the user runs the search for "Kayaking San Francisco" the map shows all kayaking trips in SF, but since they are all tied (using geonames.org) to the same plan, the flags are on the map stack instead of clustering. I am trying to find a solution - do you have any ideas? we have RoR - http://www.ekoventure.com

Not really sure if this is about your problem, but maybe you can also check out the following article: Group functions in Google Earth to hide details when zoomed in

After checking the site you linked, I would say the problem is more likely in your data or in your search. When I search for "San Francisco", I get a list of searches that have nothing to do with SF (but Las Vegas, Oregon, San Diego, for example). However, the map only shows markers in the center of the SF.

Is your data actually geocoded? Do you geocode a search query (using geonames, for example) and then scan your data to get items that are within a specific radius of that location? Are you actually drawing found items on a map based on their own location or based on search coordinates?

You will find a great overview of the marker clustering features for gmaps at: http://www.svennerberg.com/2009/01/handling-large-amounts-of-markers-in-google-maps/
