Is video streaming possible with Sql Filestream?
We saved all media in Sql FileStream, but now we need to stream video and audio ... Will this be possible with Sql FileStream or do I have to grab all video and audio from the database?
What technology would you use to enable video / audio streaming?
- WebORB
- FluorineFX
- Wowza (better I think than the first two)
- IIS Media (haven't looked into this yet)

When using IIS Media, it is not possible to store data in SQL Fielstream .
See here for details .
This is probably very similar to the rest of the solutions you suggested, as they all need to re-encode the material to enable streaming (if it's not already in the format you want).
You really have 2 problems :
- Transcode the video to a format that allows you to stream it across the server platform of your choice, just for this part you need to extract the files from the db since the encoding tools cannot database even if its SQL FileStream
- To store the encoded files somewhere, the media servers can access them, again they don't allow SQL Server as a bucket, they probably have their own infrastructure storage or use a file system.
Conclusion:
FileStream is extremely useful when you have complete control over the server / client, but unfortunately not in your case. You will probably have to extract all files from the database.

The FileTable feature in SQL Server "Denali" (not yet released) is specifically designed for this scenario (among others).
There is a good overview link here: Using FileTables to Manage Unstructured FILESTREAM Data .
This will allow you to directly receive and play these files via the provided UNC path without requiring any changes in the application, so you can use any of the above streaming servers.
