Is there any guarantee that a .NET application built against 1.1 will work on any machine with newer versions of .NET?

My new Windows 7 machine, for example, doesn't have a .NET installation folder with 1.1 assemblies. Will the application be built and configured to target 1.1 without changing this machine with the old .NET distribution?

You don't have to install the old runtime. Add the following XML file to your application config file:

<Configuration>
<startup>
<supportedRuntime version="v2.0.0.0" />
</startup>
</configuration>

Note that the version must match any version number of the runtime installed.

No. You will need to install .NET 1.1 to run your old application.

You cannot guarantee that your application will run as intended in newer versions of .NET. You can specify the .NET version to run in app.config if I remember correctly. You will need to install .NET 1.1 and tell the program to run using the 1.1 engine.

Detach it and see.

I used to run into a situation where 1.1 winforms exe had problems where the user had a high DPI screen setting.

The problem was with version 1.1 of the Framework and the solution was to remove the v1.1 of the framework and make sure v2.0 is in the box.

The app will run smoothly.
This workaround has been used on about 10 of our customers' machines over the years.
