.Net Windows Service for mailbox monitoring

I need to create a .NET Windows service to monitor a mailbox and handle attachments (if found) in emails, and then delete the email from the server.

I have two questions to which I would like to express my thoughts:

  • POP3 or IMAP to connect to mail server?
  • Which POP3 / IMAP library to use. At this point, we're just doing a proof of concept, so my choice would be free.

Hooray!

Ok, after some research I went with C # Mail ( http://csharpmail.codeplex.com/ ). So far this seems to work pretty well.

EDIT: Ended up with some random C # mail problems, so we ended up buying Rebex Mail and it worked great.

  • What does the server support? You will want to support them on many occasions. All in all, IMAP outperforms and outperforms a lot of ridiculous edge cases, especially with less stellar servers.
