How to add paging to sharepoint DataFormWebPart?

I am creating a news archive on a sharepoint publishing site. users can browse or search the archive. view is a simple list of date names. I am using DataFormWebPart to display the content of pages (articles). since there are thousands of articles I want to show maybe 50 per page. I don't see any inline paging in the DataFormWebPart. I am looking for a guide on the correct way to add paging. I feel like an XSL template is the right place to start.

If you look at the page using the sharepoint designer in "design" mode, you can click the general task arrow (>) and set the data presentation properties.

One of the tabs will touch "swap" and you can set the number of items per page.

The XSL template must start. Unless you are dealing with multiple data sources defining a list, the data source in the new DataFormWebPart in SharePoint Designer (SPD) will create a paged XSL template (10 items by default). Then you can view and edit the XSL if you want to change the look or operation. After the initial XSL template examines the properties of the web part in the browser or SPD. There are other settings (like async) that you can change. Paging technically works with multiple data sources, but it only resides in the original data source. If the number of children is large, it is often too large to see paging control in the SPD.
