How do I allow uploading files outside the home directory using SSH?

I am running Fedora 8 Core server. SSH is enabled and I can log in with Transmit (FTP client) on port 22. When I log in, I can successfully upload files to the users home directory. Outside the home directory, I can browse the files rather than download / modify anything. How do I allow uploading files to a specific directory outside of users' home directory?

the easy way is to grant user rights to the folder you want to download and then add the symbolic link (-s link) from your home folder to the destination.

You can also just use

scp file user@server:/path

which will allow you to upload to any directory you have permissions to

  • File is the file to copy
  • user and server should be obvious
  • / path - any destination path on the server to which you have rights; so / home / user / will be your likely default home folder.

You need to make these directories writable by users or (more simply) by this user group. This is, of course, a huge security hole, so be careful.

HI, Grant the user write permission to the FTP user to the directory where you want to upload your files.
