What I need to know about running my own dedicated server (as of Windows 2008)

I am thinking about getting my own dedicated server with the following characteristics:

Processor: Celeron 440 2.0 GHz
Memory: 1 GB
Primary HDD: 160 GB SATA II

This will work with Windows. I have some experience with local IIS and playing with servers, but I have never installed it (at least for Windows) and I have never dealt with DNS / backup and security issues.

My question has two parts:

  • Will this server be able to run Windows 2008, SQL Server and possibly Exchange on it without issue. I am worried about CPU and RAM.

  • Are there any tutorials / tutorials out there that talk about how to administer a Windows server from start to finish. (I'm looking for something like slicehost FAQs for nix based servers).

You run into RAM problems. See MS documentation and minimum requirements (SQL Server and Exchange). Also note that newer versions of Exchange only work on 64-bit systems.

Personally, I would recommend installing CORE version W2K8 if you plan on going with the described configuration.

It depends on the user's load. If you have about 1,000 unique users / month, this means that you will probably have 30 users per day - roughly 1 hour. I think that you will be using more of the processor running on this computer personally. So it really depends on the load of the user.
If I were you, I would add more RAM to have something around 4GB. RAM is the cheapest upgrade.

You state, "I've never dealt with DNS / backup / security issues."

I would suggest to you that these are the most important issues. You need to stay on top of security by applying security patches, insuring firewalls, etc.

After the fact has been brought up for sites that have been hacked, I can tell you that this is ugly. Find out everything you can before embarking on this server on the internet.
