Switch update from master MySQL server to slave server

Assuming I have configured database replication (MySQL) using a Master-Slave configuration and have these Master and Slave servers in sync, how can my C # program know that it should update the slave when the master server fails? What are the conditions under which a C # program switches from a master server to a slave server?

I am using MySQL server.
