Large SAS Character Field Sizes

I am trying to import a large blob field from a MySQL table via PASST via SAS ODBC. The field is greater than the maximum length allowed by SAS. According to SAS 9.2 documentation, character type fields can have a maximum length of 32k. Has anyone had any experience with storing large character fields in SAS? Any suggestions other than the obvious break it down into smaller substrings?

If you really need all 32K of this data to work, I would import it into multiple columns and use arrays to iterate over those columns anytime you need to process.
