Set file name? setup.exe vs install.exe vs others

I'm going to create an installer to deploy my application, which is a Windows executable (not an MSI file). I am using NSIS. This app is for French people, and the word "install" is close to "install" in French.

Is there a filename convention? What's the best choice for you?

It seems that "setup.exe" is the most popular name comparable to "install.exe"

What do you think?

Thanks for your reply.

setup.exe

is by far the most popular convention in the Windows world. I would say go with it.

Sometimes setup.exe is used to install, repair, and uninstall an application. I think there is no good answer to this question. I prefer names like application_installer

or application_setup

. Even one organization has Firefox Setup 3.5.6.exe

and sunbird-0.3.pl.win32.installer.exe

.

I never thought about it ... but doing just that - setting is really the wrong word and setting is, I suppose, the right term.

You are installing the software, so I would go with the installation ... the installation assumes that it is already installed (unless you change the settings during installation) - somehow you are still installing something.
