Application cannot be initialized by error (manifest file problem)

I am trying to use a library (.dll) in my project. Everything seems to be fine-tuned. Everything works in release mode. When I debug it I get this error on startup:

ldr: ... the application cannot be initialized with an error (or similar, I translated it)

I found out that it has something to do with the manifest files. I rummaged around a bit, in the project settings, but nothing really worked / I couldn't get my head around. The error persists.

Does anyone know a quick solution? I don't care if it's dirty.

I think I liked dll-Hell better than the manifesto - Hell !!

Solution: Wrong version of .dlls loaded. I didn't know they were still lying around the system. Depedency Walker is a great tool and put me on the right track. So I will accept this answer.

Thank you very much!

I always use Dependency Walker for debugging this kind of thing. It will tell you what dependencies your dll is missing.

Are you trying to run executables in debug mode on a PC without installing Visual Studio? If so, you need to copy the Debug CRT DLL onto it. See here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa985618(VS.80).aspx

It may have something to do with dependent DLLs that are not available in debug mode (but available in release mode). Make sure the required debug libraries are available (for example, in the path).
