Fonts in a multi-platform environment

What is the best way to work with fonts in a multi-platform distributed system? If I want to use a common font across all systems to show the user that this is the best way to do it. From what I've read on each platform, there are fonts belonging to the same family (eg serif, sans-serif) but with different names. CSS hopes that the function is baked where it makes the best choice it can use for the font on the user's computer. Is there any similar functionality either in system libraries or external libraries for Windows and Linux. Am I using C ++ mostly?

Can anyone point me in the right direction for documentation?

thanks

fontconfig is a cross-platform library for finding fonts either by direct name (Times Roman) or common aliases like serif-it that most modern Linux software like GNOME and KDE desktops is used to find fonts and used in combination with libraries like Pango for text and FreeType for rasterizing fonts.

I would try Pango. AFAIK used by GTK +, Mozilla and Google Chrome (not sure about the latter).
