Information Rights Management (IRM) and SharePoint - can sysadmins view the contents of a protected file?

We are considering rolling out a MOSS site for our HR department, but there are some concerns about system administrators having access to highly sensitive material regarding performance and salaries. It looks like IRM is the silver bullet we're looking for so that MOSS sysadmins CANNOT open documents to view content.

Can anyone confirm that IRM will provide content for our Sys admins on our MOSS site?

Thanks! -Tim

There are two ways to use IRM with SharePoint:

  • SharePoint Integrated Mode: This mode applies IRM to the document on the fly at the correct resolution when the user uploads it . This saves the document unsecured so that an administrator with direct access to the SQL database can view the contents of the document.

  • "Standard": If IRM is applied to a document before uploading it to SharePoint, the document is kept in a secure state (there are 2 protections: SharePoint permissions and IRM permissions). Therefore, even the SQL administrator will not be able to check out the document in this case. However, there are some side effects: for example, the search will not work because the search engine will not be able to retrieve the content of the document.

In your case, you will need to use the second solution: encrypt documents before uploading them to SharePoint.
