Firebird connection not working for limited user

In my Delphi7 application, I can connect to the database when logged in as administrator ("Dave"), but not when logged in as normal or restricted user ("Paris"). Happens in XP Home and Vista Business Ultimate 64. I am using an alias for db and trying to put a .fdb file in Program Files, in the application folder on drive C and in User \ Application Data and Documents and settings \ Application data.

Is there a tried and true rule for placing the .fdb file? Am I missing something?

Time to rephrase the question. I still have the same problems with limited user access, but now I know that Firebird runs as a service - it should be able to r / w any file anywhere. And, mghie, your suggestion that I am trying to access with isql was ingenious. I can connect as a restricted user. I probably broke something in my application and the IBO is sent to it.

Rephrased question: What is the generally accepted best place to install a .fdb file?

Yes, I can connect to isql as "Paris". I suspect this issue is related to where the .fdb is located. a) Program Files \ Appname \ Appname.fdb b) C: \ Appname \ Appname.fdb c) C: \ Documents and Settings \ All Users \ Application Data \ Appname \ Appname.fdb

The application does not work as a restricted user when the database (alias) is in all of these locations.

You seem to be using windows authentication to log into the database instead of firebird's own authentication.
Have you tried to provide a username and password?
Other than that, what's the actual error message when trying to connect?

I don't believe restricted users have permission to write files to most of the locations you named for storing the .FDB file:

  • Program Files \ Appname \ Appname.fdb
  • C: \ Appname \ Appname.fdb
  • C: \ Documents and Settings \ All Users \ Application Data \ Appname \ Appname.fdb

It looks like you are using Firebird as an embedded database. In this case, it is best to save the FDB file in each custom application data folder. For instance:

C:\Documents and Settings\Paris\Application Data\Appname\Appname.fdb
