Pentaho vs. SAP Business Objects
Pentaho is a full-fledged BI suite, which means it can handle everything from reports, OLAP, dashboards, etc.
I've only briefly covered the reporting side of BO, but I haven't looked at any other systems since working with Pentaho three years ago. It is a very powerful system (and FOSS). There is also a very vibrant and active community there. As a FOSS, Pentaho also encourages the community to contribute. Some recent examples of this are Saiku (formerly called the Pentaho Analysis Tool, 1.0 around the corner, already usable as a plugin on a BI server) and the Community Dashboard Framework (which is now a core component of the package).
The best suggestion I can make is to download the test server from Sourceforge and start playing with the toolbox. It's free, so there is no trial period to worry about.
Pentaho also provides support packages for both individual components and a complete package. Last time I checked prices, it was like $ 2.5k for a component and $ 10k for up to 10 developers on a single server.

With business objects, you have created universes, which are the domain semantic layer on the database. You do this with BO Designer. These universes are then used with the reporting tool by simply grabbing objects in the semantic layer. The point is that, since the Universe contains subject-oriented semantics, any user who knows the subject can easily create a report by dragging and dropping elements of the Universe into the report. No need to know sql. Users, reports, and universes are then managed in a repository where you can define endless security combinations in between. Reporting and security management can be done through the web application.
Also, you have BODS, which is an ETL tool that allows you to create and load report databases / data warehouses / data marts / EIS / ODS / .......
There are other tools that have not been used. I just used BODS (ETL), BO DESIGNER (Universes), DESKTOP INTELLIGENCE (reports) and Central Management Console (CMC) for security.
