The most efficient way to draw smooth animations from google maps?

I am trying to animate over google maps, hopefully using an html5 canvas element. Is it possible? Animation only along the lines of moving and rotating rectangles (mimicking traffic flows / patterns), nothing fancy, but not what I see is supported directly in the google maps API.

Is there an alternative maps API that can support this? Would I be better off trying to do this on Google Earth instead?

I don't really like webgeek, so I apologize if this seems like a strange question!

Yes, you can use HTML5 element <canvas>

to draw and transform elements on top of Google Maps. You can check out the following Stack Overflow post for a quick example showing how to rotate an icon on Google Maps using an element <canvas>
