R: ggplot2 why is my legend showing faded colors?

Why did my legend disappear in these examples below? Note that the colors in the legend are not as vibrant as the colors in the graph:

r <- ggplot(data = diamonds, aes(x = carat, y = price, color = cut, group = cut))
r + geom_smooth() #(left)
r + geom_smooth(size = 2)  #(right)

I think they are the same color - they are different surroundings that make them look different.
