Typically VS project files are not backward compatible. But there is no reason why you cannot create a new VS2005 project project and add various code files to it and save it separately. Synchronizing 2008 and 2005 project files is not difficult, just use a compare tool like SourceGear DiffMerge * to compare them and move the corresponding lines between them, you need to pay attention to the tags Reference

andCompile

<ItemGroup>
    <Reference Include="some assembly" />
</ItemGroup>
<ItemGroup>
    <Compile Include="some code file.cs"></Compile>
</ItemGroup>

I don't know why you would like to go back to VS2005 if you have access to VS2008.

* this is not the only option, there are a bunch of good tools out there.
