Will Drupal be a viable CMS for a mobile web app?

I am evaluating open source CMS systems to see which one is best for delivering mobile mobile web applications to mobile handhelds.

So far, I lean towards Drupal because it seems to be the most extensible, flexible, best performance (cache and compression, etc) and has a good user management system.

The CMS should be able to deliver HTML content that renders perfectly for most smart portable phones. I have to accept most, if not all, will do it the way you would just control the front-end (headers, CSS, HTML and javascript) to ensure it renders correctly ... right?

So is Drupal a good option? And, is there anything else I am missing when choosing a CMS to deliver mobile web pages?

I guess it depends on what "rich mobile web application" you are talking about. As far as translating the front-end device to mobile devices (like screen size based UI, etc.), For so long a CMS allows you the flexibility to manage stylesheets and JS that's all that matters.

The choice of the CMS itself also depends on your own level of comfort. Check out Joomla! also

I think Drupal is fine for your application, but it doesn't have native support for mobile. I've worked with drupal, but not mobile web apps with Drupal. But check this one . It seems we can control things as you expect.

Update: check this one as well

One thing to watch out for with Drupal is that the theme engine tends to be quite verbose. If you look at almost any Drupal site in something like Firebug, you will quickly notice that it contains nested nested nested nested divs.

This makes it great for theming, as almost always the element with a unique ID applies CSS styles. The downside is that it presents heavy complex pages that can cause problems for mobile browsers.
