Custom Form Input Options for the Web?

I'm wondering if there are any good out-of-class forms for web development? I am currently using inline controls <input>

. They work very well, but they are too big for my application (especially on OS X). I am wondering if there are any libraries that I can replace as replacements.

I am especially interested in those that:

  • Are as close to native control behavior as possible. Support for tabs, highlighting the current text box, pushing up / down in <select>

    , etc.

  • There is something that replicates <select>

  • Good looking and compact

I know you can use CSS for some styling, but it's pretty minimal and looks different depending on the browser.

Thank you for your help.

HTML is not that modular. It's important to note that you're also limited to browser support. The only ways to customize look'n'feel HTML are with CSS and Javascript. There are basic CSS / JS based UIs available as jQuery UI and several CSS based formal solutions with the goal of having the same look and feel across (most) browsers.

You might also consider developing a Rich Internet Application (RIA) using one of Flex , Air , JavaFX , Silverlight , etc. So it looks exactly the same in every web browser, but this requires at least an additional plugin, which the client may need to install first.

These two from Codrops give native selects "display: none" and then add an overlay that can be modified / modified.

Quite simple, you just need to call the plugin in the select box.

You can try creating controls with Flex / Flash and using JavaScript to get the values.

This will allow you to customize the control as much as you like, while still being compatible with most users / browsers.
