Windows Application and SQL Server

What's the best practice for a Windows application connecting to SQL Server hosted on the Internet? I am currently using an IP based connection string with SQL authentication, nothing special. However, some clients are unable to connect using port 1433 and my guess is that the whole approach has some security issues.

Providing SQL Server over the Internet is fraught with security issues. I suggest you read this MS article: Connecting to SQL Server over the Internet

There are four options for connecting to sql server:

  • Common memory.
  • Named pipes.
  • TCP / IP
  • VIA

Since you are browsing this over the internet, I think 3 are the only options. However, as the previous post shows, this is NOT a sound architecture. You should really turn your business logic into a web service and expose the web service instead of the raw sql interface.
