SQL Server port is blocked

Developed a Windows application that remotely accesses SQL Server online. However, the client ISP is blocking port 1433. What are the other parameters for connecting to SQL Server from a Windows application?

SQL Server must have a network utility where you can configure the port to be used. Check with your ISP to find out which ports are open (they might even open 1433 for you) and then configure the server to use that port.

In my setup, you choose:, "Start > All programs > Microsoft SQL Server > Server Network utility"

select "Enabled Protocols"

, then "TCP/IP"

and "Properties"

.

From there, you can set the default port to a more accessible one.

You can change the port number that SQL Server is running on to use the port that is actually open at the ISP.

Since 1433 is the default port for SQL Server, it is a common target for hackers. Some ISPs choose an arbitrary port number to trick it. You may need to find the port number that is from them.

Another option is to use an IIS-hosted WCF web service and your Windows application calls that service.
