I am using the default ruby 1.8.6 installation.

I am using MySQL 5.0.77 64bit. mysqld

works and I can use the mysql shell, so I suspect my problem is related to mysql.gem

, although I'm by no means sure.

Can anyone suggest any advice?

Ok. So it turned out that I needed to run MySQL 5.0.77 32-bit for it to mysql.gem

work.
