WCF client gets TimeoutException (and I close my connections)

Here's the thing ... I've been working on this issue for a long time with no luck

I have a WCF service hosted on IIS (I also tried on a console host and I get the same behavior) that I call through my scvutil generated proxy and the service cannot respond after a few (very few calls).

But here are a few tips:
1- This only happens in a test environment (not with services hosted on my dev machine), numbers!
2- I call the service asynchronously (client.MyServiceAsync)
3 is the hardest ... if I run the fiddler to see what happens, the client runs and never fails, I of course close the fiddler (without even restarting the client)

I don't know yet what is going on. I started to think maybe the server (Win2003) has some kind of "guard" that blocks further connections, is it possible? Please trust me when I say that I close clients after every call, in fact after receiving a response from the server, since I am using asynchronous calls.

Any advice or advice would be more than appreciated. Yours faithfully,

Edit: I thought this might be helpful: I enabled tracking on both ends with no luck. On the server side, I see connections coming and going ... and at some point there is no more connection. While on the client side I can see that the connection is working until one of them throws a TimeoutException ... that's all I get

So, this is how I fixed the problem in case anyone is facing the same problem.
My services called asynchronously returned a stream, and that stream was not hosted on the client, so the proxies were not freed.

Thank you all for the comments. They somehow led me to a solution, because there was nothing that I had not heard before.

Your best bet would be to enable tracking for both the client and the service to see the control flow. At least then you will get visibility into the actions being taken by WCF.

Here's information about enabling tracing: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms733025.aspx

And I would recommend loading the client-side and server-side traces into the Service Trace Viewer so you can see related events. Here's more information about this tool and how to read the output: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa751795.aspx

This tool is invaluable for debugging this kind of thing. Hope you can see what's going on right away.

If you find that you still cannot see the information you want, you can also try logging messages (the trace trace viewer can also read these files).

I really think you are on the right track in thinking that connections are not closing properly. Especially with asynchronous operations, it's easy to do this without realizing it. This has happened to me in the past when I recreated my client object before the final request was fired. This made me firmly close the second object connection, but not the first. The viewer showed it pretty quickly.

WCF supports throttling services. This allows you to limit the number of messages / connections / instances that can run simultaneously. Search for ServiceThrottle on MSDN.

You specify your ServiceThrottle in your app config like this:

 <behaviors>
      <serviceBehaviors>
        <behavior  name="Throttled">
          <serviceThrottling
            maxConcurrentCalls="1"
            maxConcurrentSessions="2200"
            maxConcurrentInstances="1"
          />
        </behavior>
      </serviceBehaviors>
    </behaviors>

If you suspect that throttling is a problem, look for the ServiceThrottle object in the debugger or dump. Here's an example of using cdb on a dump:
