You can ' google summer of' for ideas.

Open source projects are always looking for good developers, and you can learn a lot by examining existing code and talking with other developers.

It would really help if you could name some of your interests so we can guide you in a more specific way. Saying that you would like to work on a C ++ project does not give us any clues about how you like to spend your time. If you don't want you to work on a C ++ compiler ... in which case I would link to the gcc pronto command.

There are literally hundreds of thousands of open source projects with wishlists waiting to be completed by a motivated individual, and a great way to gain experience and connect with the community.

Do you have an advisor? Talking to her or another professor is probably best. I've found that things are easier in the Gradient School if you work on something that suits the interests of the professor, if you don't have your own interests.
