Calling a Windows executable (.exe) from a ColdFusion application

I have no experience with ColdFusion, but I would like to know if it is possible to call a Windows.exe file from a ColdFusion application (assuming the application and the .exe are running on the same computer) and then use the answer from the .exe to navigate to another method in your ColdFusion application (or, for simplicity, just display the response in an alert box).

You can run the exe with cfexecute.

You can store the output from the exe into a variable and then pipe that to another program using another cfexecute.

cfexecute is pretty limited. For example, it does not output the error text.

An alternative is to use the exec method at runtime JAVA. Here's even more details on this in relation to Coldfusion.

This can be tricky.
