Reading barcodes from Java

I am dealing with barcode reader in my java application. The problem is that the barcode before and after reading and sending the actual barcode is sending a return code. I have a JTextFields and when the reader reads the barcode it changes focus and then sends another result which causes the window to close. Anyway, "intercept" these "return" commands?

I think that barcode readers (hardware) can be programmed not to send the returned data after the read is complete. They are usually programmed by reading barcodes from the user manual.
