What exactly can Full Control with SharePoint Designer do?
I was invited as an intern to develop a SharePoint site. My team won't budget for Visual Studio and I don't have physical or remote access to a SharePoint server (running Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 aka WSS) on the back-end server.
So what exactly can I do ? I am familiar with web technologies like PHP, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. However, since the environment is SharePoint, I am stumped trying to figure out how much control I have with Microsoft's definition of Full Control.
If I can write some C #, I'm sure that will be enough, but since I didn't say Visual Studio for me.
Any good ideas for the functionality people would use in a site built with limited functionality WSS and SharePoint Designer with Full Control? Can I somehow manipulate the default web parts in something cool or useful? Can I do some Ajax tricks to do something in the background?
Thanks in advance, I'm new to StackOverflow and really want to participate here!

In fact, you can do a LOT in SharePoint outside of a custom .NET solution. Some recommended knowledge:
-
JavaScript / jQuery - Learn how to interact with a WebService using jQuery. SharePoint provides many very useful Web services in the / _vti_bin directory. Click here to view: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms479390.aspx . For example, I recently created a web scrolling slideshow page fully using the built-in jQuery and SharePoint web services that are pulled from the provided image library.
-
DataForm Web Parts. Do some research around what they are and how they work in SharePoint. Tl; dr one is that they are database bound databases that are bound to an SPDataSource and then rendered using XSLT to format the associated data. You can work with them in the SharePoint designer fully using your aspx page markup.
-
Do some searches on customizing sharepoint list forms. NewForm, DispForm and EditForm of any list or library can be configured to add behavior or content to them.
The ones at the very top of my head ...
EDIT:
I forgot to also mention http://www.muhimbi.com/Products/SharePoint-Infuser-%28Free%29.aspx
I meant to test this as the concept sounds like. I haven't tried it myself, but it will save you a lot of hassle when it comes to adding a custom script that spans your entire site.
