Create Word / RTF file with table of contents from Java

I want to create a Word or RTF file with a table of contents (with links to each section) from Java. In my opinion, iText and Apache POI do not support table of contents creation. Some clients of the application are still using older versions of Word, so I need a library that supports the old Word document format. Does anyone know how I can do this?

Have a look at Java API for OpenOffice . He will do what you want.

Late, but perhaps helpful to others. Docmosis is a good option. He's working on the OpenOffice API, but you don't need to spend time learning this API. It provides templating and manipulation, a range of data source options, and all OpenOffice input and output options. In particular, it also updates TOC and indexes in the final stages of document rendering.
