Greasemonkey script to pause video playback on inactive tabs

Often when browsing in Firefox I right click on a link and open it in a separate tab for later viewing and continue reading the current page. However, when the link is a Youtube script, playback starts immediately, even if the tab is not active. Other video players (like fora.tv and TED.com) do not start playback until you activate this tab.

Is there a greasemonkey script I can use to make sure the video (and especially the Youtube video) is paused if their tab is active?

I found two options:

"Alternative Youtube video player" (greasemonkey script) http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/13955

Script Summary: Replaces youtube flash player with FlowPlayer flash player.

  • replaces youtube player
  • no hd
  • no 16: 9

Firefox Add-On "TubeStop" http://www.chrisfinke.com/addons/tubestop/

  • disables autoplay of YouTube videos.
  • does it every time (even if the tab is active)

For now, I'll save the TubeStop addon.

I think Youtube does this by default now (only play video when the tab that the video is included in is enabled)
