Can Win32 FreeType be used without the .dll file?
I am teaching OpenGL myself and I am implementing ttf text rendering using FreeType 2. I downloaded the library from
http://gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/packages/freetype.htm
and after a few minor problems, I started working correctly. What worries me is that I have to put a copy of the freetype6.dll file in the directory with my executable in order for it to work. I usually try to avoid a bunch of unnecessary DLL files floating around. I'm kind of new to Windows programming, but from what I understand, most libraries can be built to run fully from the lib, not to execute the dll at runtime. Looking through the documentation from FT my brain is melting, so I thought I'd ask here to see if there are any developers who have worked with FT before, and if so, if they know how to create a library so that no dll is required at runtime ...
Thanks in advance for any advice or support.

This is something common DLL. All your DLLs should be in PATH the same way LD_LIBRARY_PATH
. Also under Windows (as opposed to Unix) the current directory is always in the PATH. Therefore, you just need to set the PATH variable to point to the location of this DLL.
Now, for Unix ... you probably just installed this library by default, as well as hundreds of other useful libraries that are missing by default on Windows.
So ... No, unless you link statically, you have to use the DLL somehow. And my suggestion is to use a dll.
