Creating data for the application

If you plan on building an application but don't have enough data to populate the database, how will you generate some?

Do you know of any application that can generate data based on some criteria and export it later in a MySQL database?

I am always trying to populate the DB with some real data associated with an object. So I see how the data will be addressed to the user. Of course, if you want to run performance tests, you must generate some random data.
