How can I control (adjust up or down) the level of an I / O channel or microphone? and how can I render the spec (as a graph or whatever)?

you can try using the mixer APIs to find the line in the volume control. I found it very difficult to pick the right one (especially if you want it to work on both XP and Vista / Win7). Check out .NET Voice Recorder for an example of how to use NAudio to do this.
