VS2008 insists on "Itanium" default for Active Solution platform in C ++

I just started using C ++ VS2008 and downloaded the sample archive from MSDN. Vc_samples.exe file - sorry, I don't have a link right now.

My problem is that most of these examples won't compile. The Start Debugging button (green arrow) was disabled without any explanation from the IDE.

More luck than skill, I stumbled upon the Configuration Manager dialog (under the Build menu) and noticed that all of the sample projects that will not be built have the Active Solution platform installed on Itanium. When I changed this to Win32, I could create projects.

My question is - can I change the default setting in VS somewhere so the Active Solution Platform will always be Win32?

Went through all the options, looked at VS help, Googled, and still came up with an empty one, so appreciate any suggestions.

Thank,

I have looked all over the place to see if I can find the answer to this question and I don't think it can be done (which seems strange, really). I tried to reorder the entries in the solution file (sln), but as far as I can tell, it works like this:

1) If you have a solution options file (suo), it will use the last selected config.

2) If there is no suo file, it will use Debug as default config if Debug config exists.

3) Otherwise, it will sort your configurations in an alphanumeric way and use the first one.

So you can probably trick VS into using the other if you are that inclined. Just rename the debug config to something like "Debug All" and add your preferred config with an underscore or other punctuation mark. eg "_Release All"

I only have Win32 platform-specific installed, so I can't check these options, but it might work the same.
