Sources for software as risk management

I am looking for my own research for sources who view software as a risk management method. I don't mean risk management for software development projects, I mean how running software can automate risk management.

My interest is more philosophical: How do people put software into action to actually gain control over factors that would otherwise be out of control in an automatic way?

An analogy I like to use is camera speed: it is a device that makes drivers drive slower (as long as they stay within the camera's range). Instead of manned speed cameras, restraint is automated for drivers. These cameras - where they are installed - reduce the need for preventive police interventions and are thus an effective way to reduce the risk of accidents at that location.

What I'm looking for specifically are books or websites that do this kind of research and case studies of how the software actually managed risk (or not).

Thanks for any pointers. If I need to clarify this question, please let me know.

You can look at a whole host of problems:

  • Software can prevent medical failures and prevent the thousands of errors that occur every year. Microsoft has an initiative called the Microsoft Health Common User Interface ( CUI ), which provides user interface content controls and toolkit tools that cover a wide range of patient safety concerns for healthcare organizations around the world.

  • Forensic video analysis, facial recognition software, software that can display crime data, and other similar software tools can help prevent crime.

  • Another element I could think of is green computing and how it relates to global warming. VMWare and such companies create virtualization software that can help with this.

There are many more things like this, and I hope I touched on some of the things you expected.

You may be in trouble from a research perspective because what you are asking is using overloaded terms.

One possibility is that you think about risk management as to life and property caused by software. if so, you should check out RISKS Digest .

The other is what you think about financial risk, in which case you want to study actuarial science. If this is the one, let me know as I know good bands for this stuff.

Another thing that you are interested in software security and the like, in which case you should look at Nancy Leveson's material.
