AJAX timeout in MVC

I have an ASP.Net MVC application. I am using an AJAX request on a page that requires user authentication to run an action on another controller that returns a view to update a table on the page. The action that makes the AJAX request also requires authentication. The problem occurs when the user resolves their session timeout and then does something to trigger an AJAX request. The whole page is not redirected to the login page. Instead, the view returned in the AJAX request is the login page, which is then populated inside the div intended for the updated data table.

Is there a way at least for the query to return an error message instead of a login?

Surely you could create your own Authorize attribute and check if HttpContext.Current.Request.Headers ["XMLHttpRequest"] return an error otherwise redirect to the login page
