SQL Server Express 2008 Replication and Synchronization

We are looking at developing a small, simple access system for a customer using SQL Server Express (2005 or 2008) as the database. The only complicating factor is that there are two offices and they need to synchronize some (but not all) of the data between them.

What are my options in the Express version for this? Are there any benefits to using 2008 during 2005?

You can look at managing this yourself - using the GUID for the primary keys and the last update timestamp, and keeping track of the last sync, etc.

If there isn't much to sync, then it shouldn't be too difficult.

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express (SQL Server Express) can serve as a subscriber for all types of replication.

SQL Server Express cannot serve as a publisher or distributor.

Must be done:

1) Server - SQL Server 2008 - Publisher / Distributor

one central server - sql server 2008 - this will be the central place for the data. You can create a publication on sql server and specify which all tables should be included in the publication (before that you also need to complete which replication method exactly)

2) Client - SQL 2008 Express - Subscriber

in your case - every office can have sql express - you can use as much as you like. These express copies must have a subscription to the publication generated by the central server.

(this also means the SQL server must be accessible to the client - if you are not on an intranet - VPN can help - vpn must be enabled - to create subscription and sync). If you don't have a vpn - the server must have a public IP address and a port open to which the client can subscribe).
