Default log domain for Sharepoint

When running Sharepoint (WSS 3.0) with Windows Authentication (NTLM), external users must specify their usernames as DOMAIN \ username. This makes sense because you can have multiple domains, trusts between them, etc. However, in my case, I only have one domain and I want my users to only be able to connect with their pure username. Is there a way to set up Sharepoint with the default login domain to get this to work?

Changing Authentication to Basic or Forms is not an option for me.

This is a Windows / IIS issue and not something special for sharepoint.

You can find a more detailed explanation at http://forums.iis.net/t/1151401.aspx , but in principle this is not possible due to the design of integrated authentication - the client has to know the domain before contacting the server.

The closest you get to the default domain is the local logins on the server - potentially a solution if the users are indeed external.

Consider that some browsers might be configured to automatically provide NTLM credentials. For example, IE can do this. I suppose this will be the default for sites on the local intranet, and perhaps even for Trusted sites (if not, you can change them as it is).

There is software to reassign these settings (policies) to users if their computer is part of your domain.
