Best language rig

I was listening to a podcast recently (maybe SO - I don't remember) when someone said that one of the reasons Java was so successful and popular was because it was a tool.

Using big FOSS editors like Eclipse, NetBeans. Metrics tools like Cobertura, Find Bugs, Build tools like Maven and ANT .. I have to agree

I did a little bit of .NET and the tools are fine. The problem is that there is no depth in the tools that Java has. The FOSS material seems pretty limited.

My question is, are there modern languages with better community and better tools to get the job done?

Of course there are emacs and vi!

seriously, just like some Java tools, many of their features don't make sense in other languages / environments.

If you are looking for languages other than Java and C # with good tooling and library support, I think the next most supported language is Ruby. However, I believe the tool, library and community support for Ruby is much less than Java or C #.
