Connect to a digital camera from a mobile phone?

A client (photographer) asked me if some kind of mobile phone software could be written so that he could physically connect it to his professional digital camera (Canon or Nikon) and transfer photos (or a subset) to the cell phone.

I'm trying not to put platform limits for mobile phones (Symbian, Windows Mobile, etc.) from the start, so I leave those limits on purpose.

Can someone give me some advice?

You need a connection between camera and mobile phone:

  • Some Windows mobile devices have received USB-Host-Function , so you can connect a card reader or camera via a USB cable and read files from the device. I've never heard of a Symbian device that supports usb-host, but there may be some.

  • If the camera supports either bluetooth or ir , you can use these protocols to transfer files as most mobile-phonse supports this.

Once you've got a connection (and protocol support on your platform), it's easy to write an app to transfer a file from device to mobile. You can write this application in any supported language (java for j2me, python (symbian), net (windows mobile)

My digital camera saves photos to a memory card. I can just remove the memory card from the camera and insert it into my Windows Mobile phone and view the photos on the phone.
