What's the best way to check the apache access.log files?

What tool would you recommend for relatively simple (no-nonsense) diagrams based on apache access.log files? Ideally I would have something that ran on the server and accessed the directory and understood that the files are .1, .2, .3, etc. And he knows how to parse them (and had a web interface). I guess there are many solutions, I don't actually find anything with google ... any advice?

Or maybe you would advise to skip the .log files altogether and just use a different solution for using metrics?
