SqlMembershipProvider.ApplicationName Property

Q 1

To configure the membership provider, you also need to add a section to your web.config file. One of the properties of the SqlMembershipProvider is also the name of the application. If you do not specify this attribute, the Membership API will associate objects in the database with the root application named "/".

A) what is meant by a root application?

For example, if I create a new website inside a folder named Website1, and if I do not specify the applicationName attribute, the objects will be associated with the name "/ Website1". Is the Website1 folder that the quote describes as the root application?

B) I am assuming "/" represents some kind of root directory, but which one?

Q2

If you have not specified the Application-Name property in your membership configuration, the API (and therefore any administration tool such as WAT) associates objects with the root application named "/".

What exactly does the above API quote linking objects to the root application mean? It's just that these API classes will tell the membership provider to associate objects in the DB named "/ + DirectoryWhere__appIsSaved"?

In IIS, the root application is always the website (unless you remove the application settings, in which case it will be depending on which external directory is configured as the application.) Basically:

Inetpub
   >Website Folder (typically, the root application)
      >Folder Name
      >Application (could be the root app, if you removed the one above.)
         >Sub Directory
         >Sub Application
