Hacking a window

I recently bought a new set top box and the hacker spirit makes me do something with it. I understand that there can be no standard procedure to hack it / play with it is still there

so my questions are:

  • what hardware knowledge do I need to have to get a basic understanding of how a set-top box works. (any instructions)

  • How can I set up an interface with my computer?

  • what external hardware dev. kits / components you might need?

  • How can I find out if there is a linux box in it? and then get the details of the Linux kernel versions on it?
