VB.net 1.1 Create TCPIP Printer Port Using CreateProcessWithLogon API
A few months ago, I wrote a VB.net console application to migrate a group of approximately 100 printers and over 1,800 users who use them from older HP printers to mixed print servers and Direct-IP Printing solutions. The application uses a database to compare installed printers and remove old / invalid shares and reassign to a new Win2K3 based print server. Or create a TCPIP printer port and install the driver for printing by IP address.
It worked very well, but users needed user rights to create a TCPIP printer port. This is not a problem for the main campus, but smaller remote sites need a solution that allows the application to be launched by users without user rights.
My solution was to take advantage of the CreatePrinterIPPort function and put it in its own wrapper application and then call it as needed from the main application using a hard coded local admin account for that purpose, but I am having problems when I create createport application. If I run the standalone app it creates the port without issue, but when I run it in my test app to create createport using the CreateProcessWithLogon API, port creation fails with an "access denied" error. I am limited to using .net 1.1 as 2.0 is not in our environment and I was told that it would not be clicked just for this application.
Any thoughts?
