GCD and AppleEvents / NSOperationQueue and AppleScript

As I understand it, the streams provided by GCD have a runloop, but no source / port. Now I am using some methods that call AppleScripts via AppleEvents inside NSOperationQueue. And sometimes my application crashes with the following stacktrace command.

my questions:

  • Using AppleScript inside NSInvocationOperation or NSBlockOperation
  • Using AppleEvents inside GCD-Threads
  • Do I need to add source / port to runloop gcd-thread before using AppleEvents?
  • Do I need to add source / port to runloop gcd-thread before using [CATransaction commit]?
  • Do I need to add source / port to runloop gcd-thread before using [NSObject performSelectorAfterDelay ...]?
  • if so, how?
  • Is it possible to just call CFRunLoopRunInMode (kCFRunLoopDefaultMode, 5.0, false); /// or 30 or a specific appleevent timeout?

Note that the AppleScript component has limited thread safety. Since 10.6, you can use it for non-main threads, but you will need to create a new ComponentInstance for each thread. I think you can do it with OSAKit, otherwise you have to resort to the gnarly Carbon API. What is best depends on what you are trying to achieve (for example, you are using user-supplied scripts or scripts hard-coded into your application and what prompts them to run through NSOperationQueue).
