Of course, Arial is without a doubt the bastard brother of Helvetica - and he is clearly distinguishable by all "specialists". For a good story, check out http://www.ms-studio.com/articles.html or check out the fantastic 'Helvetica' doco.
Microsoft Sans Serif, like Arial, is bundled with Windows, but more Helvetica-like than Arial - assuming you don't need italics.

You can download Arial from the msttcorefonts project . According to Wikipedia :
The Arial monotype, developed in 1982, unlike the Helvetica in some few details, has the same character of width and is indistinguishable from most non-specialists.
