Get Microsoft Communicator status

I want to add Communicator Presence to my application (like Outlook and other MS applications) and I cannot find any documentation on how to get this status.

Can I query Live Communicator Server for a person's status? If there are documents in there and I just can't find them, please give me a pointer in that direction and I'll leave my tail between my legs so as not to search hard enough ...

UPDATE: The API provided requires Communicator Server 2007, but we are still using 2003. Is there an older version of the API? All downloads I can find on the MSFT site require 2007. Thanks!
