Scanning SharePoint files on a file server
You only need to add the content source to your SSP.
- Go to the Central Administration site, click the SSP link
- Go to admin administration
- Select content sources
- Select "New Content Source"
- Select "Content Source Type" for file sharing.
Unfortunately, the ease of adding a new content source is contrary to the thinking that must be done before taking this action. Specifically, you need to select an indexing account that has access to documents.
You also need to make sure the index has enough space to index the contents of the disk (plan for ~ 30% document space for the index )
Another tricky issue is hiding things you don't want to see. I've heard some extremely daring stories of poeple typing "credit card information", "password" or "salary" in search after dot on large shared drives and is rather horrified by the results.
Make sure you are familiar with the search scope to get the most out of your search, but there is no need to add a new content source.
a source to share
You need to add a search source, scope, and display group in Central Administration. See below for details:

The second link actually has a pretty good walk.
