EDI stands for Electronic Data Interchange and is a general term for describing the transfer of certain structured data between organizations.

Gentran is an EDI tool that can parse and transform data from one format to another (like XML, AS2, or X12 ). It has a business process modeling component where drag and drop programming can be done.

Collation is a general term that describes the alignment of data points from one document format to another. For example, if my company received an AS2 EDI request and we were using XML internally, I would map the fields from the AS2 document to a new XML document that my systems could read. The fields entered can include items such as part numbers that the company is ordering, shipping address, etc.

EDI is mostly canonical.

Many companies have their own systems for accounting, accounting, inventory, warehouse, etc. They want to trade electronically with their partners, but their partners are using a different ERP. EDI provides a bridge from one of these systems to the other.

Mapping is a definition used to translate a file from the format required by ERP A to the format required by ERP B.

The most common EDI versions and formats are standardized by the board of directors, which decides if additional qualifiers, loops, segments, or other modifications are needed.

To comment on the previous answer, AS2 is not a format, but a protocol is sometimes used to transfer these files between partners.
