How does mobile messenger work?

As far as I'm concerned, ebuddy manages all user accounts and when users connect to the messaging service (both from websites and cell phones) they actually connect through the ebuddy server (not directly).

Does EQO mobile messenger work the same way? Or do we connect directly from mobile to messenger (yahoo, gtalk, etc.)?

Don't these "connections through another server" make our accounts vulnerable?

What are the free (or more preferably open source) mobile messengers available for yahoo, gtalk, msn, etc.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, EQO works the same way. Yes, it makes your accounts vulnerable. Palringo is a closed source, interest-free mobile IM client. I don't know about an open source mobile IM client.
